Making Waves

Hi %FirstName%

What better way to enter the summer holidays than focus on the sea and our marine activities.

Some of you will have already learned of our work supporting the design and development of the new Finn class racing yacht that has been completing so successfully in this season's world championships. We have included the case study in this month's newsletter.

We have performed a whole range of marine work in the past which we are hoping will be of interest to you. Please see below for a brief description of the work we have covered (without giving too much away).

With our core set of skills, which are permanently based in house, supported by all our own hardware and software we can help remove your design, reverse engineering and inspection headaches.

We are only a phone call or quick email away, so please contact us with your questions to see how we can help. We look forward to hearing from you.

Let us know how we can become your first choice service supplier for all things, 3D scanning, reverse engineering, design and measurement

Please follow us on LinkedIn and Twitter and let us know what you would like to see in future newsletters. We can then make sure that we improve the newsletter offering month on month.

Thank you to those that have been providing us with feedback so far, your input is much appreciated.

With regards

Neale Williams

Sea and marine projects

We are able to support any projects both large and small. Below is a brief list of the projects we have supported and the basic reasons for that input.

Finn Class redesign and measurement. See below case studies and further info on our website.

Measurement of 10M yacht. We have scanned a number of 10M yachts effectively all of the same design and class. The purpose for this was to measure them and see where they differentiate on form and detail as well as review symmetry. Our client was then able to make informed decisions, on build accuracy, understanding of why one boat performed better than others in the same class in differing conditions as well as incorporating all that knowledge when planning the new re-design of the yacht. Effectively we supplied almost limitless product intelligence on shape and form to support the client’s needs.

Submarine. Yes, you read that correctly. We have scanned and fully Cad modelled a rescue sub. This was approximately 50ft long. We performed the scanning on both the interior and exterior of the sub. The reason for this work was to support a full redesign of the detailed components and layout of the sub. The work SurfDev did provided the perfect package for the design engineering team to work with and make sure everything fitted and packaged. The need for the scanning and CAD modelling arose because there were no existing drawings available.

Outboard Engine and drivetrain housings. We have fully reverse engineered both the exterior and interior of the castings of outboard engines. This was detailed and complex work. To make sure we could fully reverse engineer the inside of the casting we were required to have the casting sectioned so the scanner could see and therefore capture all the inside form and detail. The reason for this work was three fold. The final deliverable of a high quality Cad model allowed the client to not only, use the data as package info but also allow them to design there new components to suit the existing castings and where necessary make changes to the casting to support their package.

I hope the above gives you a good idea of the range of work we accommodate. If this has sparked any ideas of how we can support you with you design, reverse engineering or measurement needs of issues please give us a call for a no obligation chat.

Finn class yacht

SurfDev played a vital role in the design and development of the new Finn class yacht that won the Gold medal at the ISAF sailing World Cup Weymouth 2015.

The process began by fully 3D scanning Ben Ainslie's Olympic gold winning Finn class yacht, “Rita”.

Marine Design 2015

Marine Design 2015 will return to provide a forum for reporting and discussing Marine Design practice and technical innovation.

Held on the 2nd and 3rd of September at Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA) Headquarters in London, the conference has the aim of exploring innovative approaches from across all marine design sectors including the dialectic between luxury design in the superyacht and cruise sectors, and the utilitarian design approach of the offshore sector, while reflecting upon the needs of the end user.
