International Day of Disabled People 2012

Monday 3rd December marks the International Day of Disabled People, and here at CAFE we will be looking back over the fantastic year of football that 2012 has provided.

Our undoubted highlight is the UEFA EURO 2012 tournament, where CAFE was named as the official tournament charity and ran the UEFA Respect Inclusion - Football with No Limits project.

We have also worked around the UEFA Champions League and Europa League finals in Munich and Bucharest respectively, as well as working with partners in many European countries.

We would love to know what you are doing around International Day of Disabled People. Please do get in touch by emailing info@cafefootball.eu and we will publicise your events.

CAFE attends Romanian Gala of Disabled People

Joyce Cook at Gala in Bucharest

This week, CAFE Managing Director Joyce Cook travelled to Romania to address the Gala of Disabled People in Bucharest.

The event was hosted by ActiveWatch, a disability NGO that have worked with CAFE since Bucharest hosted this year’s UEFA Europa League final back in May. CAFE’s participation in the Gala was a continuation of our work arising out of the final and our on-going presence in Romania.

As part of the event, Joyce introduced the audience to CAFE and the work that we do across all of Europe. Joyce took part in a Q&A session, explaining why good access to stadiums and arenas is so important and with special reference to the National Stadium in Bucharest which hosted the UEFA Europa League Final 2012. This event saw the largest gathering of disabled people at a public event ever in Romania. The Gala was ultimately a celebration of disabled people in Romania, and acts as diverse as violinists, pianists and rappers took to the stage. A number of awards were also presented to those who had excelled in inclusion and social responsibility. The gala will be televised on Romanian national television this weekend to promote the International Day of Disabled People.

CAFE Managing Director speaks at Warsaw summit

Stadium Business Design & Development Summit 2012

CAFE Managing Director Joyce Cook recently travelled to Poland to address the Stadium Business Design & Development Summit 2012.

At the summit, Joyce launched the UEFA and CAFE Good Practice Guide - 'Access For All', and advised the stadium community on how best to design and deliver accessible and inclusive and welcoming stadium matchday experiences.

Delegates from 26 different countries assembled to share thoughts and ideas about the next generation of stadiums, arenas and sport infrastructures.

Joyce also stressed that stadium managers and operators should not just see accessiblity as a social responsibility but as a sound commercial strategy. Investing in making a stadium more accessible is not costly, and it means that many more fans will be able to attend matches.

TEDx Whitehall Women Event - London, UK

TEDx logoOn Saturday 1 December at 1 More London Place, London, UK, CAFE Managing Director Joyce Cook, OBE, will be speaking at the TEDxWhitehall Women event on the power of inclusion. This event takes place in the lead up to the International Day of Disabled People on 3rd December and as such we hope that our topic will resonate especially well with its global audience.

It is a day of networking and hearing from inspirational women about their transformational journeys and the universal journey of the seven ages of woman. If you don't know about TED talks they're definitely worth checking out. They're based on the concept of ideas worth sharing.

There will be a range of speakers including paralympian Martine Wright, businesswoman and broadcaster Lynne Franks, and Director of Communications for UNICEF UK Jane Cooper. There will also be a performance from the London City Singers, and plenty of opportunity for networking, sharing stories and experiences.

Disabled fans visit Stadio Olimpico

The group inside the Stadio OlimpicoEarlier this month, CAFE’s new Project Coordinator in Poland, Maria Popielawska, was part of a group of 18 Polish fans to visit the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, Italy.

The trip to Rome was with Fundacja Podroze Bez Granic, which translates into the Foundation for Travel with No Borders. The owners of the stadium, CONI, and AS Roma kindly organised a tour of the stadium, and showed the party around the accessible facilities within it.

After the tour had finished, one of the disabled visitors named Agnieszka said, “I promise myself that one day we will have the same level of service and accessibility for disabled football fans in Poland”. The group has already planned to visit several more football stadiums around Europe.

'Up In The Air'

Trailblazers, a network of young disabled people who campaign on social issues, have published a guidance report on air travel.

'Up In The Air' is the result of a survey of more than 100 disabled passengers who have given examples of incidents they have experienced on planes in recent years. In addition, Trailblazers held airline-focused discussion groups at 24 regional meetings across the UK during 2011 and 2012. The report looks into all aspects of air travel such as booking flights, arriving at the airport, checking in and the flight itself, exploring common issues and making recommendations on how this can be improved.
