UEFA Respect Inclusion - Football with No Limits update

Respect Inclusion logo

UEFA EURO 2012 may have ended, but the good works undertaken through the UEFA Respect Inclusion - Football with No Limits project will continue to develop in both countries. UEFA named CAFE as its  official tournament charity with more that €400,000 raised during UEFA EURO 2012. This generous funding will help to ensure that the fantastic work done around the tournament is just the start and that access for disabled football fans continues to improve in both countries. We’ll bring you more news on our legacy project over the coming weeks which will see CAFE working closely with local partners, disabled fans, the football federations and leagues and their clubs. Please watch this space and in the meantime, we hope you enjoy some of the following UEFA EURO 2012 Respect Inclusion testimonials from our project volunteers.

UEFA Respect Inclusion - building a legacy

We received a number of testimonials from our contacts in the host nations regarding the successes achieved under the umbrella of UEFA Respect Inclusion, and what the future holds.

Natalka Kusztal worked in Gdansk as one of our volunteer audio descriptive commentators. CAFE trained and appointed two volunteers in each host city to provide this dedicated service for blind and partially sighted supporters in the stadium at every match. Natalka said, "I hope that after this tournament, audio description will be a standard in everyday life, because blind people also deserve to have access to cinema, sports events or theatre performances".

Lubomir Pokotylo commentated on every match in Kiev's NSC Olympiyskiy Stadium, including the final between Spain and Italy. He said, "This is just the birth of audio descriptive commentary in Ukraine, and it is so important that we continue to develop the service now that UEFA EURO 2012 has finished... I see the work done around audio descriptive commentary as part of the project being just the start, and hopefully this service will be offered both at sports and non-sports events".

Yaroslav Hrybalskyy was one of the project coordinators in Lviv, working alongside our Ukrainian local implementing partner - the National Assembly of Disabled People. He said, "The UEFA Respect Inclusion project has had an incredible impact on society’s attitude here in Ukraine. It is crucial that we see this as an opportunity to develop rather than a one-off event".

You can read the full stories by clicking the person's name above, and visiting CAFE's dedicated UEFA Respect Inclusion - Football with No Limits website.

We are sure that you will join us in thanking everyone who helped us to deliver a successful project including our local project partners, TUS, NADPU and Martin Zwischenberger Associates, all our amazing volunteers, and our partners and friends and not forgetting UEFA, UEFA EURO 2012, and the National Agency of Ukraine and PL 2012. Thank you from all at CAFE for all your support.

CAFE announce organisational restructure

Polish blind football showcase eventThe CAFE Board has recently reviewed our operations and made some changes to the structure of the organisation with a view to building on our early successes and to help maximise our potential and to make the very best use of our resources. As such, we have appointed a Head of Development and will be recruiting a number of in-country Project Coordinators to support our UEFA EURO 2012 legacy project and our ongoing works across Europe.

Elena Karpukhina becomes the new Head of Development and we are sure that you will wish to join us in congratulating her on her very well-deserved promotion. Keith Ferguson has decided to move on but we’re pleased to say that he won’t be going too far as the newly appointed Chair of the Scottish Disabled Supporters Association and having accepted an honorary role on the CAFE Advisory Group. We wish to thank Keith for his commitment over the last few years and for his on-going friendship and support for CAFE and our works

FARE announce Action Weeks 2012

Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE) have announced that their annual Action Weeks campaign will take place from the 16th to the 31st of October 2012.

The Action Weeks aim to increase public awareness of the discrimination in football; create a united front by bringing together everyone in football; and develop ideas and new practices that challenge exclusion. A key part of the activities are the events that further social inclusion by bringing people of different communities together through sport.

To help organise grassroots events, FARE is able to offer small grants for activities that take place during the Action Weeks period. The activities FARE are able to support include the production of campaigning materials (banners, flyers, fanzines, posters, t-shirts, stickers), the production of fan choreographies and flags, the organisation of stadium actions and community days and football- related intercultural events such as special matches, debates or tournaments.

News in brief

  • Research is being carried out into communication between blind or partially sighted people who have autism or Asperger's syndrome. The questionnaire is available in English, French and Polish. To take part, please click on the relevant language.
  • Breaking Barriers: The Disability Rights Movement in Russia - "Certainly, over the last 20 years, conditions for disabled people in Russia have improved... Russia’s ratification of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in May signaled a great moment for the country’s more than 13 million disabled citizens. In practical terms, this long-awaited ratification means that Russia must now translate the guarantees in the convention into domestic legal reform and overcome the pervasive discrimination against disabled people. That is far from an easy task". Please click here to read more.
