Good afternoon,
With 10 days to go before the GDPR deadline I feel like we need to move on and consider life post 25th May.
In my recent chat with Bob Bond, CEO of WriteUpp, he made the point that once the GDPR dust has settled this isn’t (and shouldn’t) be the end of the road.
No, he’s not suggesting that you should be on an endless GDPR hamster wheel but he was advocating that you follow ICO (and others) guidance and continuously “design in” privacy to your practice, systems and processes.
To be clear, this is not about “must have” features that you need to deploy to comply with GDPR. This is about continually moving your business forward, streamlining processes and at the same time “designing in” better privacy practices.
The kind of things that you might want to consider are:
- Online Booking - Allowing your clients to self-enter their data and book their own appointments slashes admin time but it reduces the privacy risks associated with scraps of paper/notes that might get made when bookings are taken over the phone or in person;
- Online Payment - Getting paid online ends the frustration of chasing for payment and makes life easier for your clients. But it also minimises the privacy risks associated with taking payment over the phone and lessens the likelihood that personal data will end up in errant spreadsheets used to manage your finances and payments;
- SMS Reminders - Maintaining a list of the next day’s clients and calling them to make sure they’re attending is time consuming. Although it's unlikely to cause any privacy issues, win back this time by sending automated SMS reminders with no reference to the client’s identity.
All of the above are major time savers but they’re also great ways to “design in” privacy and stay on the right side of the GDPR.
