Henry Webber Memorial Service

A Memorial Service was held in the Memorial Gardens, Horley Recreation Ground on Thursday 21 July 2016 to commemorate the centenary of the death of Henry Webber, who died on 21 July 1916 on the battlefields of France during World War One, aged 67 years, the oldest soldier to be killed on active service.

The service was conducted by Rev John Glasspool, Chaplain of the Royal British Legion, Horley Branch.  The Memorial Service included the unveiling of a lectern, detailing Henry’s life story.

The service was well attended and included three generations of Henry Webber’s family, some of whom had only met each other for the first time the previous week.  Henry’s grandchildren and their families travelled from as far as Australia to attend the service.  The Horley community was well represented including, pupils from Horley Infant School, Meath Green Junior School, members of the Horley Churches inc St Barts, Surrey County Council, Royal British Legion and Town Councillors.  David Hall, a local historian, presented a family tree to Henry Webber’s great great great grandson, Jamie Alpine. Hall, targeting participants from 8-24 years of age. The aim of the sessions is to promote social cohesion, friendships and community ties in the local area.

Using a combination of cricketing drills, games and occasionally other sports, the sessions will be a fun way to learn a new skill or develop existing skills while making friends and most importantly enjoying an active lifestyle.

For more information please email George Sims, Community Cricket Coach.

Gatwick Greenspace-Horley Wildlife Rangers

Organised by Gatwick Greenspace, the Wildlife Rangers is a group for ages 12-16 yrs that meets Thursdays (10.30am -2.30pm) during the school holidays (with the exception of the Christmas break) at Trinity Oaks School in Horley. They offer a range of exciting and enjoyable wildlife related activities that provide useful practical countryside experience and skills and help foster a passion for the natural world. Experience from the successful Crawley group shows that many young people choose to attend regularly, so we see friendships developing too, while the 'feel' of the sessions is informal and fun.  The cost is £10 per session (first session is free). Reigate Town Hall Heritage Open Day

Reigate Town Hall will be opening its doors on  Saturday 12 September. Having been completed in 1901, Reigate Town Hall is a fine example of a building in the Arts and Crafts style. When originally built, these municipal buildings housed not just the Council, but also the fire station, police station and the law courts. A tour will reveal this history and also give the opportunity to see how parts of the building have been adapted for your council today.

Join the Mayor for morning coffee, a light lunch or afternoon tea and visit him in the Mayor's Parlour
