Update from Jayne, Strategic Co-ordinator

Hello and Good Morning. Isn't it great what a bit of sunshine can do to lift the mood - hope you've had chance to enjoy some of it over the weekend. We've reflected this past week on Mental Health Awareness but we know the importance of good mental health and emotional health and we hope that you know where to go for the right support? Remember our befriending group now is also part of our family group and get-togethers and last week we enjoyed a cake decorating workshop! More of these to come I'm sure.

You might have seen a post about Home to School Transport that has been shared? I'd encourage anyone to check out the links to the information on the council page - have a look at the FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) and also there is a contact email and phone number. There will be a post 16 workshop arranged for 14th June in the morning and this will be led by council SEND team and SENDIASS. Other workshops for wider age ranges will be arranged if people want them - so please let us know, as this is something we are happy to facilitate.

Autism/ADHD: We hear from families who have waited a long time for assessments. If you have had an assessment privately, for Autism or ADHD, then would you please let us know, we can gather information on reputable organisations, as this is something we get asked quite a number of times from families.

A recap of meetings over the past week and a bit:

  • Chief Officers Group (or local charities and voluntary orgs): Children and Young People group - hearing of some great work with SEND needs by Challenging Perceptions, Shropshire Youth Association, and SYST.
  • Discussion about 0-5 pathways as part of the Multi Disciplinary Team.
  • Regional Meeting of Parent Carer Forums.
  • Learning Disability Partnership Board.
  • Healthwatch T&W who are talking to us about accessibility for GP surgeries.
  • Meeting to plan workshops for Autism in Schools Project.

I've just about finalised the parent carer annual survey so that will be coming out to you shortly and hope you will support the completion of it. A range of experiences help us to ensure that we are representing everyone and the reporting from this feeds into our priority areas and also the experiences shared where they can make the most difference!

Thanks for reading, have a good week.

Best Regards

Telford's Big Walk Week

Stroke Awareness Month

May is Stroke Awareness Month. Stroke Awareness Month, run by the National Stroke Association, is all about wearing purple to raise awareness of strokes and the impact they have. They share the following information: A stroke is an attack on the brain which happens when blood supply to part of the brain is cut off, causing death of that part of the brain. The effects of a stroke vary depending on which part of the brain is affected and how severe the stroke is. If you suspect you or someone else is having a stroke, phone 999 immediately and ask for an ambulance.

Exercise and Stroke: Regular exercise has many long-term health benefits and lowers the risk of heart problems that may lead to stroke. For most people, at least 150 minutes (2 hours and 30 minutes) of moderate-intensity aerobic activity, such as cycling or fast walking, every week is recommended. Research also shows that exercise has both positive physical and psychosocial effect for people who have suffered a stroke too. If you're recovering from a stroke, you should discuss possible exercise plans with the members of your rehabilitation team. Find out more at Stroke Association
