Parent Carer Wellbeing Study

Shared from University of Exeter...

Have you heard about the Parent Carer Wellbeing Study? www.parentcarerwellbeing.org

It’s a national survey of parent carers in England and by sharing your experiences you can help researchers develop better support for carers in crisis.

The study is being led by the University of Exeter and the survey has been co-designed by carers.

There’s no limit on the type of illness or disability your child has and parents, step-parents, foster parents, kinship carers, and legal guardians are all welcome, as long as you live in England and your child (or at least one of the children you care for) is under 18.

To complete the survey online or request a hard copy, go to www.parentcarerwellbeing.org

Update from Jayne, Strategic Co-ordinator

Hello and Happy Monday....

Hope everyone had a good weekend, and the weather was much brighter of course, which tells me that spring is on the way, and I need to get outside to do some gardening. I love to hear and see the children out and about too. Hope that you've been able to do family stuff? It's really interesting where people are going, and what they are doing - there seems to be quite a few offers popping up all over the place doesn't there - swimming, more swimming, boardroom cafe's, soft play centres...

Whilst all this community work is going on - that's great, but we're also still working on the wider 'short breaks' offer, the respite offers, recruitment of staff and PAs to meet family's needs.

We've held our first 'Parent Reps' meeting of the year this last week, in person - it makes such a difference to see the team properly, round a table, and we had a really good catchup with the morning focussing on 'children (0-18)' and the afternoon focussing on adults (18-25). We've also welcomed two new parent reps - one focussing on short breaks and children, and another on education and EHCPs, so will be making more introductions over the next few weeks.  Some of the discussions and key items we discussed: CAMHS and their challenging behaviour course, and wider mental health discussion, vaccinations for CEV, short breaks and use of personal budgets, equality and diversity in the generalised sense, our Ed Psych/Autism support sessions, accommodation for adults, PfA navigators and support for transition.

The Autism Childrens' Hub launch is tomorrow, and this will be recorded and shared.  We have a list of questions ready for the panel - it will explain the Hub and also where it fits within the wider ASD Pathway - those voices of yours have been integral into the development of this work, and we have much more yet to do, and we're here every step of the way.  There are some new team members sitting within the BeeU service now and we are in process of arranging meetings to discuss processes and pathways.  As well as the wider BeeU work, I had a meeting this week with the new manager of BEAM (Childrens Society) in Wellington - some great news happening there that we will be able to share with you including extension of drop-in sessions, and a wider offer more suited to children and young people with Autism.

A piece of work we have been asked to be involved in is around the use of medication - particularly that prescribed for behaviours that challenge. . . (not ADHD medication). If your child is on any of this type of medication, we'd be interested in hearing your views and invite you to talk to us and share your experiences.  This is a very emotive subject, we know, and experiences will be handled sensitively as always.

Thank you for taking the time to read this update and I hope you all have a good week.

Best Regards

Jayne
