CAFE meets with PFL President in Ukraine

As part of CAFE’s UEFA EURO 2012 legacy work in Ukraine, our Project Coordinator in Kiev Alex Ostapa recently met with Sergiy Makarov, the newly-elected President of the Professional Football League. Alex and Sergiy discussed how CAFE and the PFL could work closely together to improve the matchday experience of disabled football fans in Ukraine.

Instructional stewarding movies shot in Poland

Instructional videos on how stewards should communicate with disabled fans have been filmed recently at the Stadion Narodowy in Warsaw, Poland. The aim of the stewards training programme is to raise the standard of stewarding at football matches played in Poland, and provide a better quality of service for all fans. The package is based on European best standards and national legislation.

Blind and partially-sighted fans getting the full picture

A 36-year-old Fluminense fan, Daniela Matoso dos Santos is disabled and has always settled for following the game on radio or on TV, with friends describing the action for her. Or at least she did until Saturday, when she made her first visit to the Maracana, for the Round of 16 tie between Colombia and Uruguay, an experience that she was able to enjoy to the full.

Audio-descriptive commentary changing lives in Brazil

One particular example of how audio-descriptive commentary can change the lives of partially sighted and blind people is Daniel, a young football fan from Belo Horizonte. Daniel loves football and is a big supporter of the Brazilian national team. Daniel, with his father Anderson, have attended two 2014 FIFA World Cup™ matches in Belo Horizonte – Costa Rica vs England and the Round of 16 match between Brazil and Chile. Anderson has shared a video of their experiences at the latter match, which is absolutely worth watching. The video can be found in the article linked below.

Roving reports: Morgan and Stephen Parry travel to Brazil

CAFE is eager to hear from many of the disabled fans who have travelled to Brazil, either to attend 2014 FIFA World Cup matches or to soak up the atmosphere in the official FIFA Fan Fests. Morgan Parry, a young disabled football fan from the UK, has gone to Brazil with his father Stephen. CAFE first met with Morgan in November 2013 and have stayed in close contact ever since. Morgan and Stephen have shared a short blog about their experiences in Brazil.

7th European Football Fans Congress in Italy

Earlier this month, football fans from 35 countries discussed the current situation for fans in Europe at the 7th European Football Fans Congress in Bosco Albergati, Italy. FSE is the independent democratic network of football supporters across Europe currently representing more than 3 million football supporters in 45 countries and its annual European Football Fans Congress is the ideal platform for fans to improve the exchange between active fans all over Europe.

Scottish Disabled Supporters Association holds AGM

The Scottish Disabled Supporters Association (SDSA) recently held their 2014 Annual General Meeting in the Scottish Parliament building at Holyrood. The SDSA was launched in October 2010 and membership is open to disabled supporters, their personal assistants, family and friends who support football clubs at all league levels in Scotland. Regular meetings take place, which all members are welcome to attend.

The aim of the guide is to provide a benchmark of good practice for both new and existing stadiums, offering practical, clear solutions that will help football clubs, national associations and stadium managers to deliver high-quality grounds with facilities and services that are accessible, inclusive and welcoming for all.
