Press Release
7 September 2010: Nationalist football protest in the center of Kiev (Ukraine)
On September 2010, in the center of Kiev a demonstration took place that was organized by a group of Ukrainian football supporters together with the All-Ukrainian Union Svoboda, a nationalist political party in Ukraine.
The protesters’ messages were against different aspects of modern football, amongst others were demands to “limit the number of legionnaire Ukrainian clubs in all leagues and prevent naturalization of foreign players and their application to all the national teams of Ukraine”.
During the demonstration, the participants openly demonstrated racist symbols and made discriminatory chants. This event targeted foreign players and promoted racism and discrimination.
The Centre for Access to Football in Europe (CAFE) considers this event to have been deeply offensive and stands firmly against discrimination of any kind.
CAFE’s message is clear, football has “A Place for Every Football Fan” and we will continue to work with our partners across Europe to ensure that the game is welcoming and accessible to all people.
CAFE will be in Kiev this week to meet with key representatives from EURO 2012, the Ukrainian parliament and our disability NGO partners in the region as part of our ongoing support for improving the situation for disabled football supporters.
